First Citizens Supernovas Hosts Pan Camp
Press Release
First Citizens reaffirmed its commitment to youth development by supporting the First Citizens Supernovas Youth Summer Camp, which took place from 12th to 23rd August 2024 at the band’s pan-yard in Surrey Village, Lopinot.
The camp offered 32 young participants, aged 7 to 18, an enriching experience in music theory, steelpan history, and basic performance techniques. Beyond musical training, the programme included arts and crafts, games, and other creative activities designed to foster teamwork and creativity.
Krystle Julien, Co-Manager and Public Relations Officer of the band, highlighted that the camp was made more accessible to the community thanks to year-round fundraisers by the band and the support of First Citizens. She also emphasised their commitment to inclusivity, noting that this year’s camp welcomed two differently-abled children who adapted well and thoroughly enjoyed the experience.
During his visit to the camp on 20th August, First Citizens Chairman Anthony I. Smart was warmly received by the participants. He encouraged them to pursue their passions and take pride in their cultural heritage. “First Citizens is dedicated to playing an active role in the communities we serve, and we look forward to continuing our partnership with the Supernovas Steel Orchestra so that young boys and girls like you can have the opportunity to learn more about our national instrument,” said Mr Smart.
The First Citizens Supernovas Youth Summer Camp is part of the band’s broader efforts to engage with and support their community through meaningful cultural and educational initiatives. This visit underscored First Citizens’ ongoing commitment to nurturing talent and promoting cultural diversity.
