National Poetry Slam 2020
Alexandra Stewart wins the Grand Slam!
Alexandra Stewart has become the first National Poetry Slam Champion to successfully defend her title. Stewart, 22, is also the fifth woman to win the competition in its eighth year.
Stewart won the First Citizens National Poetry Slam on Sunday 27th September, 2020 during the broadcast of the competition’s first-ever televised finale.
Kevin Soyer and second time finalist Ahmad Abdullah-Muhammad, placed second and third respectively.
Underscoring the senseless harm of racism, Stewart’s piece earned her the generous reward of $50,000, with Soyer picking up $20,000 and Abdullah-Muhammad $10,000, all courtesy title sponsors First Citizens.
Head of Brand and Marketing Larry Olton reinforced The Group’s support for the Slam: “The educational value, the development of the literary arts, and the platform for positive self-discovery and expression provided by the Slam are some of the key reasons we remain committed to this partnership with the Bocas Lit Fest, and by extension the National Poetry Slam, and have invested so heavily in it as reflected in our cash prizes.”
