SPORTS AWARDS 2019 AND HALL OF FAME INDUCTION 2020
With the country being thrown into immediate lock-down a week before Sports Awards 2019, First Citizens and the Sports Foundation were able to turn what seemed to be a setback, into a remarkable success. Supported by a determined production team, a well-executed awards and induction ceremony was produced and aired on three national television networks on Sunday, April 12th, 2020.
Notwithstanding the new format, the show which for the first time in the history of the awards was combined with the Hall of Fame Induction ceremony didn’t lose its usual glamourous finish.
Ninety-nine (99) youth and senior nominees, representing thirty-two (32) sport disciplines and including seven (7) Special Olympic athletes, were honoured for their outstanding performances for the 2019 season. Additionally, ten (10) highly accomplished sport ambassadors who made lasting contributions to the development of sports in Trinidad and Tobago, were inducted into the Sports Hall of Fame.
Tribute was also paid to four sport legends, Wendell Mottley, Edwin Roberts, Kent Bernard and Edwin Skinner who achieved one of the most outstanding sport accomplishments in our nation’s history – a collection of Olympic Medals in the 1964 Summer Olympics, for our small, independent nation. The team who ran for the first time together brought glory all the way from Japan with the following medals –
- Sliver Olympic Medal – Wendell Mottley – Men’s 400 metres
- Bronze Olympic Medal – Edwin Roberts – Men’s 200 metres
- Bronze Olympic Medal – Wendell Mottley, Kent Bernard, Edwin Roberts and Edwin Skinner – Men’s 4×400 metres relay
